Apple's App Store is turning 5 years old on July 10. The marketplace, which was unveiled in 2008 by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, was designed to replace the Web-based programs that were initially running on iOS. And before long, the App Store became a massive hit that propelled Apple's iPhone and soon after, iPad, to the very top of the mobile landscape. The App Store's success didn't go unnoticed by Apple's competitors. Soon after the App Store's launch, the iPhone maker's chief competitor, Google, launched its own application marketplace. Now, Microsoft, BlackBerry, Samsung and countless other companies are offering application stores. There's even been an uptick in the number of so-called "unauthorized" application stores that boast applications that aren't usually available in traditional marketplaces.
